Case Study Analysis
Purpose:
To familiarize you with the case study—the process used by
psychologists to diagnosis psychological illness. By completing this
assignment, you will learn how psychologists analyze a client based on
research, current law and current DSM categories and
then communicate their findings.
Your case study will be given to you one month before the due date. Your analysis should contain three sections set off by subheadings.
Section 1: Presenting Complaint and Personal History.
Begin with a description of why the patient has come in for treatment.
List specific behaviors and the history of symptoms. This section
should also describe the patient’s personal, familial, marital,
educational and work history.
Important Note:
Information for this section will come from the case you are given. Do
not directly quote the information you are given. Instead, paraphrase
(put into your own wording) the information from the case study. For
instructions on how to paraphrase, please see this lesson on "How to Paraphrase." Section 2: Diagnosis, Treatment and Prognosis. Divide this section into two subsections with their own subheadings.
Diagnosis.
Use class readings and the DSM website to make a diagnosis based upon
and supported by the current DSM. Include the DSM criteria and matching
symptoms and their duration. Support your diagnosis with specific
evidence from Section One of your paper.
Treatment & Prognosis.
Discuss how you would typically treat the illness you have diagnosed
and what you project the patient’s outcome will be. Use the textbook
and other research to identify treatment options and prognosis
projections. Support each with scientific evidence.
Section 3: Discussion.
To demonstrate your critical thinking in this area, discuss at least
three (3) theoretical perspectives underlying your diagnosis and
treatment. Theoretical perspectives will be covered dureing the first
two weeks of the course. Using sources, discuss the etiology and
treatment of the disorder according to the three perspectives you
choose:
Theorectical Perspective 1: etiology & treatment Theorectical Perspective 2: etiology & treatment Theorectical Perspective 3: etiology & treatment
Sources:
When writing this case study analysis, you must consult at least three
peer-reviewed (refereed) journal articles that reference the current
DSM, which means that the articles must be published after 2014. The
articles must be data-driven experiments. No reviews of literature or
other types of articles should be used even if they appear in a
peer-reviewed journal. You must read the full-text of the article. The
abstract alone is not sufficient. Resource: How to Find Sources Using UMUC Library's OneSearch.
These
peer-reviewed journal articles should be used to support your
discussion of diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and theoretical
perspectives. You may also include your class text as a source.
Length: 1250-2000 words, not including title page and reference page. Citation Style: APA for in-text citations and reference list citations.
