Revising Sentence Fragments

Another name for sentence fragment is--unattached sentence part. Your goal in revising a fragment is to attach it to the sentence it was intended for or add the words required to make it a complete sentence.

When using a modern word processor, you will notice that the grammar checker flags most sentence  fragments in your writing when it is told to do so. If you right click the squiggly line placed under the suspect group of words, you will usually be told that there is a fragment that should be revised.

Common types of fragments include:

  • -ing phrases
  • "to” fragments
  • connector fragments

Regardless of type, all fragments consist of a group of words punctuated as if it were a complete  sentence. These "unattached sentence parts" should be connected to a host sentence or words added to the group to make it a complete sentence.
